Hard-to-fill positions: Over one-third of GYO candidates are becoming Special Education and Bilingual teachers
Retention: GYO candidates expect to teach in the hard-to-staff schools in their low-income neighborhoods. They will stay, rather than leave after one or two years.
Cultural competence: Since GYO candidates live in the same communities where they will be teaching, they have a deep knowledge and understanding of the students, their families and their culture. They have experienced and overcome similar barriers to those of their future students.
Experience: GYO candidates bring critical adult experience and maturity to the classroom and to managing students: from their experience as parents, extended family members, classroom volunteers, and teacher aides; experience that it takes most undergraduate education majors 2-5 years to learn.
